We had been planning this vacation for almost a year now. Our plan was to spend 4 nights in Las Vegas
and 3 nights in St. George. Now our
family vacation finally arrived but it was a lot of work getting the whole
family packed and out the door. We actually
started packing last night getting some things put together but once the boys
were in bed it limited how much we could do, besides we were tired and wanted
to get a fresh start on the day.
Michelle had been working hard to put the menu together but with me at
work all week I wasn’t able to help much.
We finally got everything planned and decided that we’d take the food
for the first half of our vacation with us and we’d buy the second half of our
food supplies when we got to St. George.
It still took quite a bit of effort to get things prepared because the
condos only have limited equipment (measuring cups and pans) and we’re not sure
what stuff we’ll have when we get there. Just to be safe Michelle decided to get some
things measured out into baggies so that we didn’t have to worry about that
aspect of cooking when we got there. But
that meant that we had to prepare half our meals before we even got on the
road. That added quite a bit of stress
to the whole packing process.
Originally we’d planned to be on the road by 10:00 am, putting us in
Vegas around 4:00 pm or so. After
packing the food, including a trip to the store, the boys packed, the car prepred
(with an oil change), and the car loaded, it was closer to 3:00 pm before we
left town. The stress level went through
the roof but since nobody died life was good.
We decided that since the drive would take six hours that each boy
would get the chance to sit in the “coveted” middle seat. We told the boys to decide who got to sit
there first, second and third. Somehow
Donovan ended up being the first to sit in the middle seat. Instead of being excited he was visibly
distraught. I’m still not sure why he
had a problem being the first in the middle seat. All he said was that he wanted to be the
second one to sit in the middle seat.
That wasn’t a good enough reason for a parental override so he had to
sit in the front first. While we were driving we listened to “The Candy Shop Wars” which we got from our friend Amelia before we left town. That was fun and made the driving time go by faster. We stopped at a rest stop just past Fillmore and had the boys get out, use the rest room and have a snack. Before we loaded up again we pulled out a Frisbee and some baseball gloves and took a few moments to make sure our legs were really stretched before finishing the drive to Las Vegas.
We decided to stop for hamburgers in St. George because we didn’t plan on being on the road for dinner but the boys were getting hungry anyway. We found a McDonald’s and grabbed a quick bite to eat. After that we loaded up and finished driving to Las Vegas without interruption.
