Bucking Hay

Friday night is usual reserved for "Date Night" or even "Kid's Night". But this Friday evening was a little different. The Boels were getting an order of hay and needed help moving it from the trucks and trailers that were delivering it to their storage area. They were receiving 312 bales of hay and each bale weighs around 50 lbs or more. We were invited to participate in moving all of that hay!

We met up at the Boel's house around 6:00 p.m. Well, David missed the turn as he was heading there straight from work in Pleasant Grove and needed some directions to get him back on course. He still beat the rest of us who were just coming from our house. But, in the end, we all beat the delivery people as they were nearly half an hour behind schedule.

All of the boys were big helpers. Aleky, Quinten and Gidean were very active in moving the hay from the stacks and the front of the trailer to the back of the trailer. Early on it involved a lot of pushing the hay bales of the top of the stack to someone waiting below. But as the stacks got lower the work was more dragging and rolling those bales to the end of the trailer.

Donovan, David, Khayyam and Michelle were mostly involved in hauling the hay bales from the trailer to the storage area. Michael was mostly involved in helping James stack those hay bales all the way to the top of the storage area.

With the two delivery people, James & Melissa, Vivian, Aldin and our family, it still took us over an hour to move all of that hay. That was a lot of work! The hay was heavy and very dusty and the weather was still quite warm, probably around 90°F.

We were happy to help, grateful we could lend a helping hand to our family. We got to learn first-hand what "bucking hay" meant. And in a couple of days, when the soreness wears off, we'll be grateful for the extra exercise.
